Eskdale and Ravenglass are right on our doorstep. Less than 2 hours driving to either campsite, both make excellent destinations for our customers at South Lakes Motorhome Hire. We took the opportunity to visit both Eskdale and Ravenglass Camping & Carvanning Sites as well as the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway and a few pubs in Boot. ![]() Unusually we had a weekend free in August and so we decided to make use of it with our family. We settled on a trip to Eskdale and Ravenglass which is a beautiful area in the Western Lake District less than 2 hours drive from our base in Barrow-in-Furness. It was a really welcome break after an incredibly busy few weeks to the start of the Summer season. Eskdale camping & Caravanning club site ![]() We stayed at the wonderful Eskdale Camping & Carvanning Club Site which is located in the beautiful Eskdale Valley and is included in the Privilege scheme operated by The Camping & Caravanning Club which all our hirers can use. Before we begin... a warning! If you are planning to visit this site in a larger vehicle such as our Motorhome we strongly recommend you seek advice on how to get to this site before you travel as Tom-tom will take you up some inaccessible roads. If you are a novice to motor-homing or driving large vehicles (particularly reversing the vehicle back into passing places on narrow roads) we do not recommend approaching this site in anything larger than 6m in length. The picture to the right shows how best to approach the site. Take note!! The sister site to this one, Ravenglass Camping & Caravanning Club Site is accessible to all. Both sites are excellent! Back to Eskdale.... The site is situated on the edge of the village of Boot, a scenic village in the valley of Eskdale. Boot is a stunning village that sprung up with the discovery of Iron Ore in the area. Of course, the Iron Mines are now closed but this picturesque village remains. It has alot to offer visitors - Eskdale Mill, a rare, Two-wheel water corn mill, Dalegarth station, the terminus for the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway - La'al Ratty which has a pleasant tearoom on the platform and there are three, yes... THREE fantastic pubs within walking distance of the site! There's so much to see and do around Boot alone... The site comprises of several fields which are suitable for tents and campers only - no caravans can access the site. It has excellent facilities, including showers, washing machine, drying room and an incredibly well stocked shop (essential since it is so far to the nearest shop!). The shop even has the facilities to purchase hot drinks, soup and toast from the self-service area for those hikers/cyclists travelling light in tents! The facilities were extremely clean and I couldn't find any fault with them at all! The owners, Martyn and Sara were very welcoming and personally showed us to our pitch and helped us "hook-up". The provided details on the local attractions and some being residents on their site we got some handy discount vouchers to use at the local pub and attractions. Photos below.... Distance from our base - 39 miles / 2 hours driving time Campsite - Eskdale C&CC Site CA19 1TH Cost - between £7.70 - £11.30 PPPN (C&CC Website - March 2015) The sister site to Eskdale is at Ravenglass. The site is set in 6 acres of woodland just 500m from the coast. It is suitable for Motorhomes and Caravans that may be too large for the Eskdale site. It's facilities include modern shower and toilet facilities, a well-stocked licensed shop, WIFI and TV Hook-up. There is a park only minutes from the site entrance and The Ravenglass Railway is only 2 minutes walk away as are the Ravenglass Roman Baths. The village of Ravenglass is a short stroll away and there are 3 pubs in the village. The mainline station is also at Ravenglass which means you can easily have a day out to Carlisle or Barrow and use Ravenglass as a quiet and peaceful base while you explore all this area has to offer. We couldn't comment on the site any further as we didn't stay at this site, but we have no reason to think it would be any different to our excellent stay at the sister site in Eskdale. We had a good walk round it and the facilities looked excellent! Photos below.. Distance from our base - 28 miles / 1.5 hours driving time Campsite - Ravenglass C&CC Site CA18 1SR Cost - between £7.70 - £11.30 PPPN (C&CC Website - March 2015)
